RESIDENCY OPEN CALL
Applications currently are accepted on a rolling basis. MiSHŌ residency in Fujino, Japan, is inviting applications from critically and socially engaged artists, creatives, researchers, writers, educators, musicians, dancers, cooks, composters, practitioners of boundary-crossing fields. We encourage context-responsive artistic creation (open-ended work, development of existing or contemplation for a new project are all welcome) through direct engagement with local community and environmental exploration within Fujino's unique cultural and natural landscape. In addition we support each artists by tailoring program to meet requirements of individual proposal. RESIDENCY DATES Summer/ Spring March 26th - April 22nd May 8th - June 4th June 25th - July 22nd Autumn/Winter August 20th - September 16th October 1st - October 28th November 12th - December 9th We offer: • Connections to local artists, craft people, growers and members of community, enabling collaborative and research opportunities. • Facilitation of workshops with local artisans exploring indigenous practices, crafts and culinary traditions using locally sourced materials. • Guided neighbourhood field trips or route suggestions for independent exploration • Participation in organized community events and activities such as organic farming, forest conservation and charcoal making. • Organizational and promotional assistance with artists-led events for residency such as performance, workshops, exhibition etc. • Providing local transportation where public transport is not available, can arrange limited travel trips required for the achievement of residency goals. The residency will culminate in an Open Studios event, providing an opportunity for residents to share their work-in-progress with the local Fujino community. The format of this sharing is flexible and determined by the resident. Additional interactive contribution during the residency such as workshop, performance, readings, exhibition etc is highly valued. This should be discussed and agreed before the start of residency to allow time for organization and promotion.
02/ ABOUT
ABOUT MiSHŌ
MiSHŌ is an organization that connects international creative practitioners to the vibrant community of Fujino town, located to the west of Tokyo. Fujino (population of 8000 residents) is known as an art village and one of the Transition Movement towns in Japan. With history as an artists’ colony where artists evacuated during the Second World War, Fujino has been the site of several art projects and residencies since the 1990s. It is a decentralized satoyama*, consisting of dozens of villages nestled in the valleys overlooked by the Tanzawa Mountains, surrounded by rich forests and streams. Misho (実生) is named after a Japanese word for “seedling.” Just as people have maintained the vitality of forests by improving the environment and taken care of satoyama as areas that sustain their daily lives, our project uses this word with the intention to cultivate the ground for co-creation where artists and local people can interact and spontaneously generate new ideas and creative solutions. By connecting these activities and the network of creative people to the world, we aim to make the area a global hub for the regeneration of natural and cultural ecosystems. We envision MiSHŌ as a space that welcomes everyone for educational and cultural events, spontaneous happenings and organized community activities. Our future hope is to develop an artist exchange program for local Fujino artists that will develop into wider ranging opportunities/ partnerships within Japan and with international artists and likeminded residencies. MiSHŌ is run by Kohei Hashimoto and Vika Množina Hashimoto. Kohei Hashimoto (Co-founder / Arts Manager) Born in Tokyo. Studied Sound Arts and Design at the University of the Art London. After working as an art coordinator for art organizations in Japan such as ARCUS Project IBARAKI and 3331 Arts Chiyoda, became engaged in operating cultural centers and organising cultural events for several communities around Tokyo. Based in Fujino since 2021. Vika Množina Hashimoto (Co-founder / Artist) Originally from Lithuania. Holds a BA in Sound Arts from Middlesex University, London. Since moving to Fujino in 2021 as a pro-active member of the Fujino community, utilizes self-directed social photography projects to explore local daily life and traditions.
MiSHŌは、東京の西に位置する里山のまち藤野を拠点としたアート団体です。 戦時中この地に疎開してきた芸術家による芸術都市構想をはじめ、80年代以降の様々なアートプロジェクトやレジデンスプログラムを市民主導で行ってきた豊かな文化的土壌、そして、トランジションタウンをはじめとした市民活動やオルタナティブ教育、森の再生活動などを全国に先駆け行ってきた寛容な地域性を背景に、私たちは、アートとエコロジーが交わる現代の視点から、地域内外のクリエーターによる共創を支援するレジデンス・プログラムやコミュニティ・アート・プロジェクトを行っていきます。 種子から発芽して育った幼植物を意味する「実生」。 この言葉を掲げた私たちのプロジェクトでは、里山に人が関わり環境を整えることで森の生命力を生活に活かしてきたように、アーティストと地域の人々が交流することで、新たなアイディアや創造的なソリューションの自発的な芽生えを支える文化的土壌を耕していきます。 そして、この場から生まれる有機的でクリエイティブな活動や人のネットワークを世界へとつなげるハブとなることで、この地域から自然と文化のエコシステムの再生を促していくことを目指します。 今後は、地域や各機関との連携を強めながら複数のパイロット事業を継続的に行い、より持続的な文化交流拠点としてのレジデンス施設の設立に向け、地域コミュニティとレジデント・アーティストと共に活動を展開していきます。 MiSHŌは、橋本耕平とヴィカ・ムノジナ・橋本によって運営されています。 橋本耕平（共同設立者／アーツマネージャー） 東京生まれ。University of the Arts Londonにてサウンドアーツ／サウンドデザインを学ぶ。 その後、ARCUS Projectや3331 Arts Chiyodaなど国内のアート団体でアートコーディネーターとして経験を積み、東京近郊の複数のコミュニティにおける文化施設の運営や文化イベントの企画・実施に携わる。2021年より藤野を拠点に活動。 ヴィカ・ムノジナ・橋本（共同設立者／アーティスト） リトアニア出身。Middlesex University（ロンドン）にてサウンドアーツの学士号（BA）を取得。 2021年に藤野へ移住後、地域コミュニティに積極的に関わりながら、自主的なソーシャル・フォトグラフィ（社会的写真プロジェクト）を通じて、土地の日常や風習／伝承を探究している。
MISSION / VISON
MiSHŌ Residency is an Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program based in Fujino, Japan. It targets interdisciplinary practitioners including artists and creators with social and critical perspectives, researchers, writers, educators, musicians, dancers, chefs, and composters. We emphasize creative activities that respond to context through direct engagement with the local community and exploration of the environment within Fujino's unique cultural and natural setting. The completion of finished works is not required. We welcome stays focused on developing existing projects, conceptualizing new projects, or pursuing contemplation and research.
MiSHŌ Residencyは、日本・藤野を拠点とするアーティスト・イン・レジデンス（AIR）プログラムです。社会的・批評的な視点を持つ、分野横断的な実践者（アーティスト／クリエイター）をはじめ、研究者、作家、教育者、音楽家、ダンサー、料理人、コンポスト（堆肥化）に取り組む人々まで、幅広い参加者を受け入れています。私たちは、藤野ならではの文化と自然環境を背景に、地域のコミュニティと直接関わりながら、その土地の文脈に応答する創造的な活動を重視します。滞在の成果として完成作品を求めることはありません。すでに進行中のプロジェクトを深める滞在、新たなプロジェクトの構想、あるいは思索やリサーチに集中する滞在など、さまざまな目的での滞在を歓迎します。
WHY FUJINO?
Fujino is a place where abundant nature and diverse ways of living intersect at close range, even though it sits just beyond Tokyo. Mountains, forests, rivers, and fields extend directly into everyday life, and the changing seasons are felt in the body.At the same time, Fujino has, over the modern era, been home to people working across disciplines—art, craft, agriculture, food, and education—sustained by small, open networks within the community. It is fertile ground for practices that nurture questions through engagement with place and deepen process over time.In addition, since the 1980s, Fujino has continued to cultivate community development rooted in culture through initiatives such as the “Fujino Furusato Art Village Concept” and the “Fujino Furusato Art Village Message Project.” Behind these initiatives lies a history in which artists evacuated to Fujino during the war and created work while building relationships with local residents. Those memories and connections have been carried forward as a cultural foundation of Fujino.MiSHŌ Residency supports the time in which practice transforms—through dialogue with the local community and field-based exploration within Fujino’s environment.
藤野は、東京から少し離れた距離にありながら、豊かな自然と、多様な人の営みが近い距離で交差する場所です。山や森、川、畑といった環境が日々の生活の延長にあり、季節の変化が身体感覚として立ち上がります。同時に、藤野には近現代にかけてアート、クラフト、農、食、教育など、分野を越えて活動する人々が暮らし、地域の中に開かれた小さなネットワークが息づいています。ここには、場所と関わりながら問いを育て、プロセスを深める実践に向いた土壌があります。さらに藤野では、1980年代に「藤野ふるさと芸術村構想」および「藤野ふるさと芸術村メッセージ事業」が始まり、文化を軸にしたまちづくりが継続して育まれてきました。 その背景には、戦時中に芸術家たちが疎開し、地域と交流しながら制作していた歴史があり、そうした記憶と関係性が、藤野の文化的な基盤として受け継がれています。MiSHŌ Residencyは、この藤野という環境の中で、コミュニティとの対話やフィールドでの探索を通じて、実践が変化していく時間そのものを支援します。

WHAT WE OFFER
During the residency period, we will provide the following support:
- Providing a network connecting local artists, craftspeople, producers, and community members
- Planning and conducting workshops exploring crafts, food, and indigenous practices using local materials
- Guiding fieldwork in nearby areas or suggesting routes for independent exploration
- Opportunities to participate in local activities and events such as organic farming, forest conservation, and charcoal making
- Operational and publicity support for artist-led events including performances, exhibitions, and workshops
- Transportation support to locations inaccessible by public transit (as needed)
Additionally, based on each participant's proposal,
we offer flexible program design tailored to individual needs.

OPEN STUDIOS &
SHARING
During the final stage of the residency, an open studio will be held to share the progress of the work in progress with the local community. The format for sharing is flexible and can be freely decided by the participants themselves. Interactive initiatives such as workshops, performances, readings, and exhibitions conducted during the residency period are also highly valued. For these activities, consultation and agreement prior to the start of the residency are expected to facilitate preparation and publicity.

MiSHŌ Artist-in-Residence welcomes applications from individuals residing in Japan or abroad who engage in the following types of practice
Application documents may be submitted in English or Japanese.
The primary languages used during the residency period are English, Japanese, and Lithuanian.

About the Selection Process
Selection will be based on the following two points:

As MiSHŌ is run by a small team, we will only contact applicants who are selected for further consideration.

RESIDENCY FEE
28 days: ¥250,000 (approx. €1,400)
Payment Methods
- Bank transfer via WISE
Upon confirmation of participation,
a non-refundable deposit of ¥50,000 (approx. €280) is required.
The remaining balance must be paid by the agreed-upon date.
CANCELLATION POLICY
- Cancellations made more than 2 months prior to the start date: Full refund minus the deposit
- Cancellations made less than 6 weeks prior to the start date: Refunds will be considered only in cases of unavoidable circumstances.
FUNDING & GRANTS
- We can accommodate payment of participation fees contingent upon securing a grant.
- We can issue the official Invitation Letter required for grant applications.
* Invitation Letters are issued only to artists selected for the MiSHŌ program.
VISA
Regarding Visas
When a visa is required for entry into Japan:
- Obtaining a visa is the sole responsibility of the participant.
- Support from MiSHŌ is limited to providing an invitation letter.
- Delays or failure to obtain a visa will not affect the refund policy.
